How do you find stay at home  jobs as a grieving mom?

A year ago, after losing my job twice, I realized what truly mattered: spending quality time with my kids. The pain of losing Cynthia made me even more determined to cherish every moment.

With a single income to support our family, I needed a flexible, well-paying job. I wanted to work from home without getting involved in direct sales or multi-level marketing. To explore this, I searched extensively for real-life stories of moms who had successfully transitioned to remote work. I was eager to discover if it was truly possible for someone like me. Along the way, I found inspiring accounts of parents who followed various paths to achieve their goals. used their existing skills in customer service or accounting, while others learned new skills like coding or design. They all had one thing in common: careful planning, skill development, and a strong commitment to their goals.

These stories gave me hope. If they could do it, so could I.

Important Considerations

Some remote jobs may not provide health insurance. Explore options used by other self-employed parents to find solutions and alternatives. With the right resources, you can balance income needs, health benefits, and family time.

What is a Good Job for A Stay at Home Mom?

The best job for a stay-at-home mom is one that fits into a busy schedule. It should be flexible and part-time, so you can balance work and family.

Many of these jobs might not offer health insurance. If you need coverage, you could look into options used by other self-employed parents. It can be tricky, but it’s possible to find a balance between work, health benefits, and family time.

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase.

1. Get Paid to Test Apps and Websites

Companies need feedback on their website user experience, and they pay for honest reviews. This offers a quick way to earn money while helping businesses improve their navigation and functionality. Here are some trustworthy companies to consider:

2. Use Fiverr

Luckily I’ve found a lot of freelance projects on Fiverr.

When I apply for jobs on Upwork, I focus only on projects where I’m confident in delivering high-quality work. Positive client reviews are crucial to my reputation and success on the platform.

My Tips for Applying to Upwork Jobs:

  1. Target Low-Competition Jobs: Look for listings with 5–10 or fewer proposals. Less competition means a higher chance of getting noticed.
  2. Verify Payment: Only apply to clients with the “blue verified payment” badge to ensure reliable payments.
  3. Apply Fast: When you find a job that fits your skills, apply immediately to stand out from other applicants.
  4. For U.S. Freelancers: If you live in the U.S., check the “U.S. Only” filter to access exclusive jobs.
  5. Start With a Trial Period: If it’s your first job, consider offering a free one-week trial. This builds trust with clients when you have no reviews yet. If they’re happy with your work, you can then move forward with paid services. This approach helped me land my first job on Upwork—and the client was so satisfied they paid me for the initial week too!

3. Take Paid Online Surveys

Times have changed! Sharing your opinions can now earn you extra cash. From gift cards to PayPal payments, online surveys offer a convenient way to make money in your spare time.

4. Research Studies

You can earn up to $400 per study by participating in research studies. Consider registering with platforms like

5. Affiliate Marketing

I’m sure by now you’ve heard of affiliate marketing, it’s the same as telling a friend about a new store you like, and encouraging them to check it out. Basically you promote products or services online using a unique referral link. You earn a commission for every purchase made through your link. This income source can be passive once established. I’ll link to some cool affiliate partners that can really get you on the passive income path soon.

6. Do Laundry

Offer laundry services to earn up to $500 per week. Many busy individuals are willing to pay for this everyday chore. Outsourcing is the new normal. Its an ongoing chore that we all do, but for some, who don’t have the time but do have the money, outsourcing is the new normal.

See how you can make money doing laundry from home here.

7. Clean Houses

Start a house cleaning service if you can arrange childcare for a couple of days a week. This type of work is flexible and requires minimal upfront costs for supplies. If you can get someone to watch your kids two days per week you should consider cleaning houses. This job is very flexible as you decide which hours work best for you and it doesn’t cost much to get started

I have a great article on how to clear a cleaning business from someone who does this today. He’s a parent who does his art to take care of his family part-time and now helps moms start their own business doing this.

How do I get started? Check out my article on how to start a cleaning business for all the information you need to get started.

How much can I make? Ken was earning $1,000 per week ad shows you how to do the same part-time.

8. Customer Service

Remote customer service positions are widely available, with many companies hiring representatives to provide product or service information. It is a growing trend to hire customer service reps from home- whether its for remote weekend jobs or part-to full-time weekday jobs.

You will be required to become well informed about the company that you will choose to work for and will need to be prepared to efficiently answer the questions that will come your way.

This is for parents who have help or who have kids who are in school during the day.

How do I get started? Normally these positions only require a high school diploma, but some companies want you to have previous customer service experience. Consider applying.

Pay typically ranges from $10 to $21 per hour. Some companies to explore include:

  • Hilton $10-$21 per hour
  • Apple $13 – $19 per hour
  • Amazon $11 per hour

It also doesn’t hurt to check out local online job boards like, Indeed or Flex Job

If you love children and have a passion for the opportunity to impact a young life, this is a great opportunity to work from home. You also get the added benefit of playtime and socialization with your kids.

How do I get started? I recommend taking this neat course on How to Start a Home Daycare Business. Ladonna operated her own profitable home daycare and shows you how you can do the same along with all the information you’ll need to get started.

You can also check out Care.com and your local FB mom groups for opportunities to grow your business.

How much can I make? It really depends on where you live, but you could charge $30 a day which turns out to $600 per month (assuming its for 8 hours a day), while some daycares will charge $900 or more a month for one kid.

Feel free to raise your price and check the daycare costs in your area to stay competitive.

Tips: Make sure you add childcare endorsement to your home owner’s insurance in case someone gets hurt and check your State regulations on the number of children you can care for without a license.

11. Sell Low-Content Books

Create covers and interior pages for low-content books to sell on Amazon KDP. This side hustle can generate monthly income with minimal ongoing effort.

I know what you’re thinking, what in the world is this! Don’t worry, I’ll explain but this is one of the best side hustles for moms because you do the work once (while you’re watching Netflix or whatever) and can make money from this every single month.

You create a cover of a book and one interior page. Post it to Amazon KDP and let your work sell.

12. Search Engine/Social Media Evaluator

This job requires no training and allows you to work your own schedule. Pay typically starts at $14+ per hour.

This is one of the best work from home jobs for moms with no experience because it does not require any training, it does not require you to get on the phone, and you make your own schedule.

As an US Rater you work on your own schedule as long as you can meet the 20 hours a week requirement. The pay is $14+ per hour and you will be evaluating search results from different search engines and rate their relevancy.

How do I get started? To become an Interior Decorator (this is different from Interior Designer) I recommend starting a website, taking quality photos of your work, and asking friends and family if you can work for them at no charge to help add to your portfolio. You can earn money by reselling items found at flea markets and thrift stores. Join a free workshop to learn how to start flipping items successfully.

Rob from Flea Market Flipper put me on to this (I know he’s not a mom, but he does this with his family). He made over $130,000 flipping items from flea markets and thrift stores PART-TIME mostly reselling on eBay.

When I read that one of his Flipper University student (single mom) makes $5,000 a month, I had to add it to this list.

How much can I make? Rob made $42,000 as a side income (10-15 hours per week). When he put more time into it (20-35 hours per week) he made $133,000. You can see the more time you put into it, the more money you can make.

Drop shipping allows you to sell products without handling inventory. You list products for sale and earn a profit on each sale.

Drop shipping is a method where you can sell third-party products from a Drop Shipping Company without ever seeing or shipping the item. When you make a sale, the product is shipped directly to the customer from the drop shipper.

Your profit is the difference between what you charge your customers and what the drop shipping company charges you.

Here is a great infographic to show how it works:

How do I get started? Boss Mom Theo McArthur has had great success with drop shipping and created a course on Udemy that teaches you how to launch your first profitable Dropship website in 14 days or less and grow your Income to $10,000 per month in profits.
